What is Counselling

Everyone needs to talk about their problems. Sometimes it is not enough or appropriate to talk to friends and family. Counselling offers a safe opportunity to discuss your issues in confidence with a neutral third-party. A counsellor is objective and can offer you a fresh, non-judgemental viewpoint.

Counselling is a process where you and a trained professional work towards resolving your problems, helping you to gain a new understanding and perspective.

You will not be told what to do, you will be helped to make your own decisions. You will learn about yourself, gain control over your life and drive change towards your own goals. As a counsellor I will support you as you gain self-knowledge and clarity.

Counselling can help with stress, relationship difficulties, depression, anger, drugs or alcohol dependence, self-harm, eating disorders, bereavement, and any issue that is troubling you.

Types of counselling

Humanistic counselling — gestalt, person centred.

What to expect from a session

In your first session we will discuss your goals and how counselling can help you towards them. This is an opportunity to see if we can work together to aid you in your journey and for you to make sure that you will be able to make the most of the sessions. There is no obligation to attend further sessions so please don't hesitate to get in touch to discuss your needs.

Sessions last 50 minutes. The exact structure of a session will be unique to your particular goals and needs and will vary over time as your own needs change.

I adhere to the BACP's Ethical Framework.

Where do sessions take place?

Please contact me for details.

How many sessions will I need?

This is entirely up to you. Some clients feel that a few sessions meet their needs whereas other clients continue over a longer period of time.

We will be working together to help you - part of this means accepting responsibility for yourself. You will control how fast you change.

Should you wish to stop your sessions you are free to resume them at a later date.

Can I receive counselling while on medication?

There is no problem with counselling while receiving medical treatment, although I would ask to be informed as to what treatment you are receiving. Any medical questions should of course be directed towards your doctor.
